Create Default Folders

When you create a new song on Tonic, you are presented with the dialog box below in which you choose the song's name and artwork. You also have the option to create a set of default folders, which are commonly used by songwriters.

The default folders selection includes the following:

  • Ideas - This folder is for all those ideas in your head and can be used for your voice memos or perhaps a phone recording of a guitar rift.

  • Samples - Samples are the reuse of a portion of a sound recording in another recording. Samples may comprise elements such as rhythm, melody, speech, sounds or entire bars of music, and may be layered, equalized, sped up or slowed down, repitched, looped, or otherwise manipulated.

  • Multitracks - Multitrack recording (or 'multitracking') is a way of recording music in which separate recordings of multiple sound sources are made which are then used to create a single recording.

  • Stems - Stems are a discrete or grouped collection of audio sources, usually multitracks, that are mixed together to be dealt with downstream as one unit. Stems tend to break down into four tracks, commonly including the melody, instruments, bass, and drums.

  • Mixes - A mix is the process of optimizing and combining stems or multitrack recordings into a final mono, stereo or surround sound product.

  • Masters - Mastered files is final stage of audio production—the process of putting the finishing touches on a song by enhancing the overall sound, creating consistency across the album, and preparing it for distribution.

  • Artwork/Lyrics - This folder may include such files as your album cover art as well text files of your lyrics.

Note: You may add as many new folders as you'd like, rename them, or delete any folder created either by Tonic or by you.
